Chuy's Mural

One of my tasks while working for the biggest beer shipper in the world is to create large mural sized wraps for our accounts. Most of the time they cover wall space around refrigerated boxes in stores where you would find the cold drinks. Some cover whole walls in restaurants and bars. Some, like this one, are placed in the window frames of a particular business. Most of the time I work from the many theme sets I've created, but sometimes the projects allow me to take a little time to create the new artwork from scratch. This mural for Chuy's started as different elements I drew on paper then scanned, finished and assembled in the computer. The seperate images were inputted smaller than a letter sized piece of paper. When finished, the mural meassured 6 feet tall by 24 feet long. It's always the part of my job I enjoy.

Shutter Cluque Version 2

The Shutter Clique's second outing was themed by our models as super heroes and villains roaming the dark downtown alleys of Bakersfield. One of the ideas of SC is to create an environment for local photographers to break away from their everyday shooting situations and have a little fun. In this episode we started after sundown which allowed for some difficult, but very interesting lighting conditions. I think one of the funnest parts of each SC meeting comes a day or two later when the photographers start uploading their images. It's exciting to see all the different creative takes on many of the same scenes. Below are some of the finished images I created.

Shutter Clique's First Outing

A couple friends put together a social group that get's together once a month to photograph models. These are a couple of my shots from the first outing. I arrived a little late as it started to get dark and decided to use a low power flash to cast little light similar to a spot. This gave some of the photos a Pulp Fiction feel...kinda cool.

I go through mine from time to a very long time. This particular moment was by the request of my daughter who has an interest in illustration. These two 18" x 24" pieces were projects for my high school art class about 24 years ago. Wow...that's a while back. The figure with the dress came from a 3" x 4" newspaper clipping of the singer Sade. The other image is a random model from a magazine ad of the period. No, that's not Grace Jones. That's what everyone used to say when I drew her, although she does have a similar hair style. They're both pencil and charcoal, as was alot of my work at that point in time. Man, I use to love drawing. Isn't it sad that our lives become so consumed that we can't take a moment to enjoy the things that make our blood flow.

The Illustration That Keeps Me Sane.

Sometimes we get so caught up in the daily routine, even if that routine includes being an artist for a living, that we forget to sit down and enjoy why we do it in the first place. I know that's cliche, but cliche terms stem from the truth. I love to draw, but my patients wears thin on long projects and coming home from a full day on the computer leaves little interest for personal work. Most of my down time is spent playing videos games with my son on our 360's. Oh...if Microsoft would only create a draw program for the Xbox. Actually, that still wouldn't help. Oops, blabbering got the best of me. Anyway, these images are smaller parts of a whole mural I created for a local restaurant. They started as pencil drawings, then scanned and colored digitally.
